Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI)
Tracking internet censorship: how to coordinate, document and investigate network interference in your country
Session Format: Workshop/Tech demo
Since 2012, the Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI) has been developing free software tools (OONI Probe) run by a global community, contributing open data on Internet censorship worldwide. A lot of this data has shed light on social media blocks and other censorship events across Africa. The aim of this workshop is to learn how censorship measurement research can help champion freedom of expression. We will discuss how internet censorship can be implemented and how it is possible to track the blocking of different websites, messengers and circumvention tools. As an outcome, the workshop participants will be better equipped to monitor censorship events and use censorship measurement data as part of their local investigations. Participants will be taught how to explore OONI data which tracks internet censorship in more than 240 countries and territories.
